Swarming Lounge is an innovative app that allows you to view virtual characters on your phone. By utilizing your camera, it creates the illusion that they are actually in your physical space. If you prefer to experience the app alone, simply tap the right icon. However, if you are at an exhibition, tapping the left icon will activate a unique mode. With Swarming Lounge, you can immerse yourself in the 'Swarming Lounge' installation and witness fascinating characters in action on your phone.
The installation is an incredibly engaging and interactive performance that allows you to actively participate in the experience. By using your phone, you can interact with virtual characters while simultaneously watching live dancers. It feels like stepping into a virtual world within the exhibition space. The project was created by kondition pluriel, led by Martin Kusch and Marie-Claude Poulin. Marie-Claude also choreographed the dance routines with assistance from Audrey Rochette. The media environment was developed by Martin Kusch and Johannes Hucek, while the Institute for Cultural Policy oversaw the design of the installation. Johannes also provided intricate game-engine programming, and Georg Schmidhuber crafted the impressive 3D models.
The installation took place at the Campina Milk Factory in Eindhoven, Netherlands, as a part of the Festival ROBOT LOVE from September 15 to December 2, 2018. Live shows were held on September 14-16 and November 15-17, 2018 featuring dancers/performers Audrey Rochette and David Campbell, along with local performers.
