The Virginia 511 app serves as your ultimate travel companion in Virginia, consolidating all the essential information you need in one convenient location. With official updates from the Virginia Department of Transportation, driving and transit directions through Google, navigation via Waze, and various other helpful resources, it is the ideal tool to stay informed while on the road in Virginia.
Simply open the app, enter the desired location into the search bar, and voila! Google will display the estimated driving or public transportation time to that destination. For further information, simply select one of the options and Google will provide detailed directions. If you prefer using Waze for navigation, just click on the Waze button and it will guide you there (ensure you have the Waze app installed beforehand!).
On the map, you can access VDOT cameras, incident reports, construction updates, bridge openings, and other information. Simply click on the overlays menu in the top right corner and adjust the options to view your desired content. To rearrange the Map Layers in the menu, just tap on the pencil icon.
The top left menu includes Twitter feeds, route cameras, travel times for specific road sections, links to other commuter services in your area, and more. To make changes, go to the bottom of the menu and click on settings. There, you can sign up for trip notifications. These notifications are convenient as you can set up a regular trip, choose your desired arrival time, and receive a notification when it's time to leave based on current traffic conditions. Keep in mind that traffic conditions can change rapidly, so travel and arrival times are estimates and not guaranteed.
In Northern Virginia, you can access detailed information about VRE trains and PRTC buses, including their schedules and routes. You can also track the real-time location of VRE trains. Additionally, by selecting "Nearby Transit Options" from specific directions, you can view drive-to-transit choices for these services (although it is somewhat limited). However, there are plans to include more agencies from across the state in the near future. And remember, the app will continue to improve with new and exciting features in the future.
